Semrush vs SE Ranking 2026: Which SEO Tool Is Worth Paying For

Semrush vs SE Ranking compared on price, tracked keywords, projects, AI search tracking and seats. Which one fits a freelancer, a small business or an agency.

Pick SE Ranking if you run one to ten sites and want rank tracking, site audits and keyword research without a big monthly bill. Its Core plan is $103.20 a month on annual billing and tracks 2,000 keywords across 10 projects. Pick Semrush if competitor research is the core of your work: it has the larger toolset, the deeper market data and the name clients recognise, but you pay more per tracked keyword.

The price gap is bigger than the headline numbers suggest. Semrush's entry SEO plan tracks 500 keywords for $139 a month. SE Ranking's Core tracks four times as many for $129 a month. If daily rank tracking is the main job, SE Ranking wins on value. If you need to dig into what competitors rank for, where their traffic comes from and how they use ads, Semrush is the stronger tool.

Pricing in detail

Semrush reorganised its plans around AI search. The current lineup on its pricing page is SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced. The SEO plan covers the classic SEO toolkit with 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily. Starter adds AI search visibility with 50 tracked prompts. Pro+ raises the limits to 15 websites, 1,500 keywords and 100 prompts. Advanced is quote-based, with 40+ websites and 5,000+ keywords.

Annual billing saves about 16%. The SEO plan on yearly billing comes to roughly $1,408 a year. Extra users start at $45 a month each, which adds up fast for a team of three.

Semrush also has a free plan: one project and 10 reports a day across its main tools. That's enough to check a domain or a keyword now and then, not enough for real work.

SE Ranking keeps it simpler. Core is $129 a month, or $103.20 on yearly billing, with 10 projects, 2,000 daily tracked keywords and one manager seat. Growth is $279 a month ($223.20 yearly) with 30 projects, 5,000 keywords and three seats. Extra seats start at $16.

The add-ons are where SE Ranking's bill grows. The Agency Pack is $69 a month on annual billing and gives you 30 client seats, white-label reports and a lead generator. Content Marketing and Local Marketing are included in a starter amount (25 or 50 articles, 3 locations) and extra usage costs more. The separate AI visibility tool, SE Visible, starts at $71 a month.

What each tool does better

Where Semrush is stronger

  • Competitor research. Independent reviews consistently rank Semrush's keyword and domain databases among the largest on the market. Traffic estimates, keyword gaps and backlink gaps are its home turf.
  • Breadth. Beyond SEO it covers PPC research, content tools, local listings and social, through separate toolkits and apps.
  • Market data. If you pitch clients with "here's what your competitor does", Semrush reports are the ones they've seen before.
  • Free plan. You can test the interface without a card.

Where SE Ranking is stronger

  • Price per tracked keyword. 2,000 keywords for $103.20 a month on annual billing, against 500 on Semrush's SEO plan.
  • Projects. 10 on Core versus 5 websites on Semrush SEO.
  • Seats. Extra seats from $16 instead of $45.
  • Client reporting. White-label reports and client access come in one add-on.
  • Trial. 14 days with full features, double Semrush's seven.

Reviewers usually describe SE Ranking's data as good enough for small and mid-size sites and less deep than Semrush for large markets and niche countries. For a local bakery or a design studio's portfolio, that difference rarely matters.

Which one for which person

A freelancer or small business with one to five sites. SE Ranking Core. You get daily tracking for more keywords than you'll need, site audits to catch broken links and missing tags, and enough keyword research to plan blog posts.

A content site or blog that lives on search traffic. Semrush SEO. Finding gaps in competitors' keyword lists is the work that pays off here, and Semrush is built for that.

An agency with client reporting. Compare carefully. SE Ranking Growth plus the Agency Pack costs about $292 a month on annual billing and covers 30 projects, white-label reports and client seats. Semrush Pro+ at $248.17 a month yearly gives 15 websites and stronger research, but extra team members cost $45 each.

Someone who cares about AI search answers. Both now track how your brand appears in ChatGPT-style answers. Semrush builds it into Starter and up. SE Ranking includes 25 prompts on Core and sells a deeper tool, SE Visible, separately.

How to decide in a week

Both tools have trials, so don't decide from comparison tables alone. A simple plan:

  1. Start the SE Ranking trial (14 days) and add your site plus two competitors.
  2. Start the Semrush trial (7 days) a few days later so both run at once.
  3. Search the same ten keywords in both and compare volumes and difficulty.
  4. Run a site audit in each and see which report you'd actually act on.
  5. Cancel the one you didn't open on day five.

If you're still building the site, you don't need either yet. Free tools like Google Search Console cover the first months. Our list of Ahrefs alternatives covers cheaper and free options, and the SEO tools page collects everything in one place.
