Astra vs GeneratePress vs Kadence: Best WordPress Theme in 2026
Astra, GeneratePress and Kadence compared on free features, paid plans, renewals, speed and page builder support. Which lightweight WordPress theme to pick.
GeneratePress is the best pick if you want the leanest code and a simple price: $99 a year for one site, or $596 once for 100 sites. Astra is the best pick if you build with Elementor or need ready starter templates, with a Pro add-on from $69 a year. Kadence has the most generous free version, with a header builder and strong blocks at no cost, but its paid plans are now sold inside a larger Liquid Web bundle that starts at $350 a year.
All three are free on WordPress.org, load fast, and work with the block editor and the main page builders. For many small sites, the free version of any of them is enough. The paid tiers matter if you want more header layouts, WooCommerce controls, template libraries or many client sites on one license.

Astra
Astra is made by Brainstorm Force and is one of the most installed WordPress themes. Its strengths are a huge starter template library and close ties to Elementor and its own block plugin, Spectra.
Free version. The free theme has a basic header and footer builder, global colors and typography, and WooCommerce support. Starter Templates, a separate free plugin, imports full demo sites for Elementor or the block editor.
Paid plans. As of November 2026, Astra sells four options:
| Plan | First year | Renews at | Sites |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astra Pro add-on only | $69/year (lifetime $249 on sale, $349 list) | $69/year | 3 |
| Astra Pro + AI | $99 | $149 | 3 |
| Essential Toolkit + AI | $199 | $299 | 10 |
| Business Toolkit + AI | $279 | $429 | 1,000 |
The toolkits add Spectra Pro, premium starter templates and Ultimate Addons for Elementor. The "+ AI" plans also include a hosted site slot and a free domain for the first year. Astra's FAQ says your sites keep working if you don't renew; you lose updates and support.
Watch for: the bundle prices are first-year rates. Renewal is about 50% higher.
GeneratePress
GeneratePress is built by a small team led by Tom Usborne. Its reputation rests on clean, minimal code and very stable updates. Reviewers often call it the safe choice for blogs and content sites.
Free version. The free theme is deliberately simple: a few layout options, color and typography controls, and good accessibility. There is no header builder in the free version.
Paid plan. In 2026 GeneratePress moved to a single plan, GeneratePress One. It includes GP Premium (the theme add-on), GenerateBlocks Pro, GenerateCloud for your own pattern library, and an AI connection.
| GeneratePress One | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 site | $99/year |
| 10 sites | $149/year |
| 100 sites | $199/year |
| 100 sites, lifetime | $596 once |
Local and staging sites don't count toward the limit. Every plan includes a 30-day refund and priority email support. If you already own GP Premium or GenerateBlocks Pro, your old license keeps working.
The math. The jump from 1 site to 100 sites is only $100 a year. For a freelancer with more than a handful of clients, GeneratePress is one of the cheapest options here.
Watch for: GeneratePress expects you to build with blocks. There are fewer one-click demo sites than in Astra, and less hand-holding for beginners.

Kadence
Kadence started as an independent theme, was bought by StellarWP, and is now part of Liquid Web's software group alongside The Events Calendar, LearnDash and GiveWP.
Free version. Kadence has the strongest free tier of the three. The free theme includes a full drag-and-drop header and footer builder, global color palettes and WooCommerce controls. The free Kadence Blocks plugin adds rows, tabs, accordions, forms and more.
Paid plans. Kadence's pricing changed in 2026. Kadencewp.com's pricing link now redirects to Liquid Web, where Kadence is sold only as part of a bundle with The Events Calendar, LearnDash and Give:
| Sites | Price per year |
|---|---|
| 1 | $350 |
| 10 | $599 |
| 25 | $799 |
| 50 | $899 |
| 100 | $999 |
Some affiliate sites still list cheaper Kadence-only tiers from $99 a year. We could not find those on the official page in November 2026, so treat them with caution and check the Kadence site before you buy.
Watch for: if you only want the theme features, the bundle is expensive. For most small sites, free Kadence plus free Kadence Blocks may be enough.
Speed
All three are light themes. A default install of any of them loads a small amount of CSS and JavaScript compared with a page builder. Independent tests in 2025 and 2026 regularly put GeneratePress at the top for the smallest footprint, with Kadence and Astra close behind. The differences between these three are small next to the effect of your host, your plugins and your images.
Where speed does change: if you add Elementor on top of Astra, the page carries Elementor's code too. The theme is no longer the main factor. Our Elementor vs Divi guide covers builder weight.
Page builders and blocks
- Astra has the closest tie to Elementor, with its own Elementor add-on pack and many Elementor starter sites. It also works with the block editor and Spectra.
- GeneratePress is built for the block editor with GenerateBlocks. It works fine with Elementor or Beaver Builder too, but most of its tools assume blocks.
- Kadence is block-first with Kadence Blocks, and also supports Elementor.
If you want to build a site with AI and then move it into WordPress, block themes are easier to edit by hand. Our WordPress section collects themes, builders and hosting picks.
Which one to pick
- You build with Elementor and like ready demos: Astra.
- You want lean code and many client sites on one cheap license: GeneratePress, especially the $596 lifetime plan.
- You want a strong free theme with a header builder and won't pay: Kadence free.
- You need events, courses or donations too: the Kadence bundle may make sense, since it includes The Events Calendar, LearnDash and Give.
- A blog or content site: GeneratePress or Kadence free.
Where to host it
A light theme still needs decent hosting. A budget shared plan is fine for a small business site; a busy WooCommerce store needs more. Our best web hosting for small business guide compares prices and renewals, and Cloudways vs Kinsta covers the managed end.
FAQ
Which is faster: Astra, GeneratePress or Kadence?
All three are lightweight themes, and independent tests in 2025 and 2026 regularly put GeneratePress slightly ahead on code size, with Kadence and Astra close behind. The difference between them is small. Your host, caching, image sizes and the number of plugins, especially page builders, affect real speed far more than the choice among these three.
Is GeneratePress worth paying for?
For many client sites, yes. As of November 2026, GeneratePress One costs $99 a year for one site, $149 for 10 sites and $199 for 100 sites, or $596 once for a 100-site lifetime license. It includes GP Premium, GenerateBlocks Pro, GenerateCloud and AI. Local and staging sites don't count toward the limit.
How much does Astra Pro cost?
As of November 2026, the Astra Pro add-on alone costs $69 a year for three sites, with a lifetime option on sale for $249. Bundles with AI cost $99, $199 or $279 in the first year and renew at $149, $299 or $429. Astra offers a 14-day refund, and sites keep working if you don't renew.
Is Kadence still free?
Yes. The Kadence theme and the Kadence Blocks plugin are free on WordPress.org. The free theme includes a full drag-and-drop header and footer builder, which Astra and GeneratePress keep basic or paid. Paid Kadence features are now sold by Liquid Web in a bundle that starts at $350 a year for one site, as of November 2026.
Why is Kadence Pro so expensive now?
In 2026 Kadence's pricing page moved to Liquid Web, which sells Kadence only in a bundle with The Events Calendar, LearnDash and Give. As of November 2026, that bundle costs $350 a year for one site and $999 for 100 sites. Some affiliate sites list cheaper Kadence-only tiers, but those were not on the official page.
Which theme is best with Elementor?
Astra has the closest link to Elementor. Its Starter Templates include many Elementor demo sites, and its toolkits add Ultimate Addons for Elementor. GeneratePress and Kadence also work with Elementor, but their own tools are built around the block editor. If you build only with Elementor, Astra saves the most setup time.
Bottom line
For most freelancers who build with blocks, GeneratePress gives the best value: lean code and 100 sites for $199 a year. Pick Astra if Elementor and ready-made demos are your workflow. Use Kadence free if you want the best free header builder, and think twice about its bundle unless you need events, courses or donations too.
